Letter From the Publisher

LaTonya Summers, Ph.D.
Fall 2023 (Vol. 9, Anniversary Issue)

I’m getting older as I find myself doing “old people stuff” as I call it. I usually detest the arrival of fall being a summer baby, but this year I had a deep yearning to buy a rocking chair for my front porch. I feel old rocking in it, but who knew that chair-rocking was a mindful practice? Researchers assert that it improves sleep, boosts mental health, improves balance, enhances muscle tone, and reduces anxiety and depression. With all of these benefits, I try to get several sessions in a week. Thank you for rocking with Black Mental Health Today magazine. The issue you are holding is a commemorative issue of the very first issue of BMHT. Inside you will read about the amazing Dr. Rheeda Walker, whose book The Unapologetic Guide to Black Mental Health is a game changer. You will also find a practical article on caregiving that captures the nuances of Black caregivers. Among the columns you’ve come to love, you’ll find a feature article on Imposter Syndrome, from a cultural perspective. Now that the Black Mental Health Symposium is over, and my memoir Black Again has been released, I plan to rest. What are your plans for this fall? I hope you’re following Black Mental Health Today on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. Find me there. Enjoy this issue and your fall break! Sisterly,LaTonya Summers
