African American men are underrepresented in counseling as clients, as counselors and as counselor educators. Drawing on his qualitative study of Black men in the profession, Dr. Jason Branch, LPC, ACS, NCC presents the 3EM Model — Exposure, Education, Engage, Mentor — as a practical framework for changing that.

  • Describe the cultural, systemic and historical barriers that keep African American men from participating in counseling.
  • Identify the five themes from the presenter’s research on Black men in counselor education, including mentorship, stigma and representation.

  • Plan specific advocacy and support steps for Black men in your own practice setting, agency or training program.
